Customizable 3D Printed Window Vent

Customizable 3D Printed Window Vent

I recently moved and needed a way to keep printing with engineering filaments without filling my new place with fumes. I didn't have the same printer location as before, so I designed a modular parametric window vent system. I'd seen a few similar designs on MakerWorld and Printables, but none of them fit my window without modification, so I made one that anyone could customize for their own setup.

Version 1: Dowel Pins and Tape

The first version connected segments using wooden dowel pins. The joints weren't airtight on their own, so I used weather tape between the seals and foam at the edges to seal it against the window frame. It worked, but it was more assembly work than I wanted. I also combined it with a ventilation grill with moveable flaps and a twist-lock hose adapter using Bambu Studio's assemble feature for the final setup.

Version 2: Dovetail Joints

V2 swaps the dowel pins for dovetail joints. The dovetail connection locks the pieces together and eliminates the weather tape between segments. Slide them together, and if tolerances are tight a mallet can seat them flat. I still recommend foam stripping at the outer edges against the window frame, I used 1-inch foam tape on either side like in V1. The same grill and hose adapter work with V2 as well.

Customization

Both versions are fully parametric. Hit the Customize button on the MakerWorld page to generate your own 3MF. The main parameters are:

  • Window lip thickness and window size: gets a snug fit in your frame
  • Hole size : match it to your AC hose or fan diameter
  • Section count : splits the model so each piece fits on your build plate

There are additional geometry settings if you need to fine-tune further.
If you run into issues or have ideas for new parameters, contact me on this site or leave a comment on MakerWorld.
